讷言敏行成语出自《论语·里仁》:“君子欲讷于言而敏于行。”意为夫子说:“君子的修养要尽力使自己做到话语谨慎,做事行动敏捷。”

原来对此条的解释不能体现本词条的精髓,真正的意思是:人们应该说话谨慎,因为祸从口出,说话不谨慎,伤害自己又伤害他人,招来麻烦甚至招致灾祸。而做事情则应该干练勤奋。总之是告诫人们要少说话多做事,是当今社会大多数人应遵循的准则。
